Here is what he had to say:

Scott B. Williams is back with a companion to his previous offering Bug Out: The Complete Plan For Escaping Disaster Before It’s Too Late. Scott has become a friend, an inspiration, and an advisor to my literary pipe dreams. I have read most everything that he has put in book form and have yet to be disappointed. Bug Out Vehicles and Shelters: Build and Outfit Your Life-Saving Escape is no exception. Read on…

In his latest book Williams continues along the lines of catastrophe preparation. This time he isolates vehicles and shelters and manages to, yet again, do what he does best. He walks the reader through the to do’s and not to do’s as well as the things to consider. I am a novice when it comes to the topic of catastrophic preparation so I appreciate the way he manages to offer examples and advice that clearly come from personal experience. It is with that voice of experience that even minor and otherwise overlooked details are relayed.
It would be impossible to include every option of each type of bug out shelter and vehicle so Williams selects a few of the major players to compare. He also often offers advice and recommendations for deviation from just purchasing out of the catalog offering “do it yourself” tips in many instances. At the end of each chapter checklists are provided which are surprisingly thorough and serve as an excellent tool when utilizing the book for its intended purpose.

Grab a highlighter and dive right in. This book is both an entertaining read as well as a reference book. It won’t make you an expert by any means, but you will most certainly come out on the other side of it a little bit better prepared when making life safety type of decisions as they relate to “bugging out”. Scott B. Here is the review as posted on his site:

The fertilizer hits the fan and you may have to evacuate your area.

Immediately, the roads and highways will be jammed with unprepared refugees, most of them fleeing in panic to go somewhere – anywhere – else.

A prepper will be prepared for this eventuality, hopefully, and not join the mindless crowd. But there may be no choice regarding staying or going prior to or during a flood, earthquake, hurricane or tsunami, and you may have to join the exodus.

So what is your plan, to get your family to safety, and do you have a vehicle you can depend on?

In his latest book: Bug Out Vehicles and Shelters; Build and Outfit Your Life-Saving Escape” author Scott B. Williams gives some educated insight.

Williams, author of the Bug-Out Survival blog and the survival-themed books “Bug Out,” and “Getting Out Alive” and numerous other publications has been a survival writer for several years.

In his latest book, Williams tackles the potentially confusing subject of evacuation vehicles.

The value of the book, Williams writes is “to make the reader aware of the key advantages and disadvantages of each type of bug-out vehicle and how important is is to perform the necessary maintenance and/or modifications to make sure it will get you to safety.”

Basically, your bug out vehicle is whatever you have. But there may be options for modifying these vehicles to fit your potential scenario. Or, if you are considering buying a vehicle strictly for an emergency evacuation, Williams gives some tips on what brands, and vehicle types to consider.

Topics covered in the book include choosing your vehicle; using specially equipped vehicles for unique situations; and using canoes, bikes, kayaks, rowboats and other human-powered means of escape.

Williams sets the stage by dividing the book into four distinct parts: Escape Vehicles, Mobile Retreats, Alternative and Back-Up Vehicles and Fixed Retreats.

The value of the book, IMO, is that it gets the conversation going. If you are considering setting up a vehicle strictly for an emergency, there is valuable information in Williams’ book.

“Bug Out Vehicles and Shelters” is not a light read. While Williams is an accomplished and interesting writer, there are parts of the book that didn’t interest me. This was mainly because the vehicles mentioned don’t fit into my area or potential survival scenario.

But the parts about shelters and secure bug out locations are worth reading for any prepper/survivalist. Too often the evacuation plan starts with “getting out of Dodge” and ends with arriving on the agreed-upon retreat location. In reality, that would probably just be the beginning, and Williams gives some tips on what to look for at a retreat area in a natural setting.

I found the book to be interesting, entertaining and informative. Williams delves into a part of emergency evacuation that the rest of us may only have given passing thought to. From that standpoint, of getting the evacuation vehicle conversation started and rolling, “Bug Out Vehicles” has a place in your survival library.Scott B. Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10984429607322718345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6925353116105107250.post-75196352680879429852011-11-01T10:52:00.000-05:002011-11-01T10:52:09.240-05:00My Latest Books are In Costco StoresMy current publisher (Ulysses Press) recently received a large order for all three of my survival-related books from Costco Stores. Since these big chains are able to buy in volume, they negotiate for big discounts which they are able to pass along to the customer. Generally, Amazon has the best prices on most books, as they too buy and sell in volume, often making very small profits per copy. But if you live in an area where there are Costco locations and prefer to shop in person rather than online, you may get an even better deal.

I don't have access to a Costco store here, as there are none in Mississippi, but a friend sent me this photo taken with his phone last week from one of the stores in the Los Angeles area. They had plenty of copies of Bug Out, Bug Out Vehicles and Shelters, and Getting Out Alive, all priced at just $8.99 per copy, which is a significant discount off the cover prices of $14.95 and $15.95:

I don't know if every Costco store has these in stock, but I'm pleased to see them offered by the chain, as they have a limited selection of books to begin with. The fact that they chose to carry all three of these titles is evidence of the growing popularity of preparedness topics in general. Scott B. The Kindle version is available for download now. I think the design team at Ulysses Press did a great job with the overall packaging of this one. Based on the steady number of pre-orders, there seems to be a lot of interest in this topic among the survival/prepping community. I think that preparing various types of vehicles for an emergency escape has a lot of appeal even to those who do not plan to bug-out in the way that I outlined in Bug Out: The Complete Plan for Escaping a Catastrophic Disaster Before It's Too Late. Whether you ever need such a vehicle for survival or not - acquiring and customizing various means of overland and on the water conveyances can be a lot of fun and provide you with great options for exploring the outdoors.
This book took a lot of research and a lot of work to put together, but the early response from readers has been great, with lots of pre-orders beginning months ago. Book Review: Getting Out Alive

This weekend, I was thrilled to find Scott B. Williams’ Getting Out Alive: 13 Deadly Scenarios and How Others Survived in my mailbox. I have been waiting for it since I read his previous book this summer. I teach Disaster Psychology for our local Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training weekends. In these trainings, we cover the importance not only of nuts-and-bolts preparedness, but of the mental aspect of emergencies as well. Scott B. Williams’ books are on my recommended reading list for trainees.

Scott B. Williams’ latest work Getting Out Alive, is an excellent contribution to the field of emergency preparedness literature. Coming as it does, on the heels of his successful book Bug Out: The Complete Plan for Escaping a Catastrophic Disaster Before It’s Too Late, you might expect Getting Out Alive to be targeted at the survivalist crowd – but it’s not. It’s a literal survival and preparedness book for people who don’t like thinking about emergencies and who certainly don’t like books about preparedness. And, in this, it excels.

I’ve often joked that civilization is a veneer. A veneer is a thin layer of wood bonded to a an inferior or less attractive substrate to improve its appearance. Very little furniture nowadays is, at its core, what it appears to be on its surface. Civilization is like that. It is a thin layer of civility held in place by the glue of modern conveniences and the ephemeral presence of authority. Take away our lights, our water, our sensory stimulation (television, radio, cell phones) and we don’t know what to do with ourselves. Take away the deterrent of law enforcement or government and people revert to their more primal natures with alarming speed. The reverse is also true. Most people have become so far removed from their more primal selves that when they find themselves in situations like those in Williams’ latest book, they don’t know what to do with themselves either.

Getting Out Alive is a collection of potentially deadly scenarios that deftly demonstrate exactly how easy it is to find yourself between a rock and a hard spot with no hope of escape or rescue. Each one of Williams’ 13 deadly tales could begin with the words, “It all started innocently enough.” Each scenario presents plausible circumstances that any of us could find ourselves in without warning and presents potential options for escape and survival. Each scenario is accompanied by real life tales of other victims who endured similar survival situations – some of them made it out, many didn’t. Each scenario is also accompanied by snippets of wisdom related to the particular scenario circumstances (like forest fires, or being snowbound). Most valuable, however, are the Ten Tips for Survival that appear at the end of each scenario. If you read nothing else, be sure to read the Ten Tips at the end of each chapter. If you read nothing else out of this book, you’ll regret it, but at least you’ll be slightly better armed for an encounter with unforeseen circumstances.

The greatest strength of Getting Out Alive is that it demonstrates that any one of us can find ourselves in a bad place without any warning – yet it also explains exactly how simple it is to be prepared. This is a great book for your friends who think that emergency preparedness is for paranoid survivalists. It drives the point home that anyone can be a victim in a disaster or an emergency and that it’s everyone’s responsibility to take steps to be prepared. Getting Out Alive is not a step by step guide to being prepared, it’s something more important – a book designed to change the way people think about emergencies.

I know that I get concerned that people I know and love just don’t think anything can happen to them. And I know that not one of these people will tuck away an extra can of soup or roll of toilet paper or bother to pack a bug-out bag until they really buy into the idea that they are not immune to emergencies. I can only hope that the light bulb goes on above their heads and they take measures to keep themselves safe.
If you’ve been worried that people you care about just aren’t ready for an emergency, Getting Out Alive would be a great gift that might just change the way they think.
As always, thanks for reading.

Worth Reading: Getting Out Alive

Posted on February 20th, 2011 by Leon in Leon's Blog

Only fools deliberately put themselves in danger to test a survival technique, or to prove something.
But how are you supposed to learn? Is there a safe, practical way to learn how to deal with emergency or survival situations without risking injury or death?

One way might be to read and study, from people who have “been there, done that.” Scott B. Williams’ latest book: Getting Out Alive: 13 Deadly Scenarios and How Others Survived” may be a valuable addition to your survival library.

One of the perks of being a journalist is the chance to interview interesting people. That was the situation last week when I interviewed Scott B. Williams on SurvivalCommonSense.com Radio.

Williams is the author of the popular Bug Out Survival blog, and wrote the bestselling “Bug Out.” I did one of the first reviews of that book last year, and when I heard he was working on another survival book, I put my name in for one of the preview copies. Getting Out Alive: 13 Deadly Scenarios and How Others Survived is not so much a survival manual as it is a look at some specific survival situations, and how people in those situations in real life managed to get out of them.

A few cases mentioned in the book also describe the plights of those who did not survive, either through bad luck, lack of knowledge or skill or some combination of factors beyond their control.
“Anyone who deliberately seeks adventure is bound to put themselves in situations that can test their survival skills,” Williams said. “I’ve been in a few of those tight spots, and learned from personal experience in many instances.” But even homebodies can also find themselves in danger, he said, when it comes to threats from natural occurrences such as hurricanes and winter storms. And the recent tragedy in Arizona, when a gunman opened fire as Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was meeting constituents in Tucson, shows nobody is safe from a deranged individual with a gun who goes on a rampage.

The purpose of a book like Getting Out Alive, Williams said, is to show how easy it can be to end up in a life-or-death struggle and provide food for thought about how the reader might learn from the mistakes of others and avoid the same situation. In some cases, the real-life examples show the best course of action that could have been taken. In other instances, he said, we can all learn from their errors in judgment.
“I limited the number of cases to 13, because of the book length,” Williams said. “I could easily have chosen 20 or 30, but I decided to pick some situations that could happen to almost anyone, and a few that would more likely happen to an adventurous traveler.”

“Some of these are scenarios that I could have found myself in,” he added, “since I have a love for deserts, the sea, jungles, mountains and wild places inhabited by dangerous animals.”
Here are some of experiences mentioned in Getting Out Alive:

Cutting Your Losses: Looks at situations in which lone travelers in remote locations have been trapped by fallen trees or shifting boulders, and had to choose between cutting off a limb or death.

Category 4: The plight of people caught in the path of a major hurricane.

In the Line of Fire: The frightening scenario of being caught in a shopping mall when a deranged shooter opens fire on a crowd.

Modern Day Castaway: Survival techniques for an uninhabited island.

Fire on the Mountain: What do you do if you’re caught in the path of a forest fire, and can’t outrun the flames?

Snowbound: Look at how easy it is for winter travelers in vehicles to get into a life and death situation during a blizzard.

Williams’ wilderness experience has been extensive. In 1992, Williams said, he took off for several months to explore some of the “blank spaces” on the American map. He did extensive backpacking trips through some of my favorite wilderness areas, such as the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and Selway/Bitteroot wilderness area on the Idaho/Montana border. He has also ventured out into the desert and canyon country of the Southwest, and has an affinity for the swamps of the southeastern United States.
Williams has been writing about sea kayaking and sailing for twenty years. He is the author of four previous books.Scott B. I started this particular blog to have a place to post general news about what I'm doing with my various projects - especially the writing projects.

My last update here included links to various sites and blogs around the web that reviewed my book: Bug Out: The Complete Plan for Escaping a Catastrophic Disaster Before It's Too Late. There have been many more positive reviews since then and I can now report that Bug Out sold out the first print run and continues to sell well. The paperback edition has been on Amazon's Top 100 bestseller list in the "Outdoors and Nature" category for 158 days (as of today), as well as in the Top 100 books in "Current Events." It has also consistently been in the Top 5 in the two sub-categories of "Survival Skills" and "Disaster Relief."

This interest in the subject matter of Bug Out has led me to a contract for a follow-up book that will be completed by July. This one will go into greater detail on certain parts of Bug Out that had to be condensed for the original book. The new book will be my third survival-related title to be published by Ulysses Press. In the meantime, I have finished the second book I contracted to write for them: Could You Survive?: 13 Deadly Scenarios and How Others Got Out Alive, and it has been edited and revised and is now in the layout stage to be made ready for publication early in 2011.

In addition, while working on this new survival book in the coming months, I am simultaneously working on a novel that should be of interest to many of the same readers, as it has some related themes. This will probably be my most challenging project to date, due to the nature of fiction writing vs. researching and writing non-fiction. It's something I really enjoy though and look forward to seeing through to publication.

The books are keeping me busy, but I'm still working on my Tiki 26 catamaran project from time to time and hope to launch it sometime next year. Occasionally I will even find time to update the blog about the project, as well as my Scott's Boat Pages blog, which is still somehow attracting a fair number of readers. Due to the interest in the book, Bug Out Survival is of course my most popular blog, and has now reached the level of over 25,000 page views per month, though once again, I don't update it as often as I would like. You may also noticed that I have temporarily removed the "photography" link from my main navigation bar in my home page, but this will be back soon. I will soon launch a new photography blog detailing my journey to learn more about DSLR photography, specifically with my Nikon equipment. With the recent release of the new D7000, I am now delving into videography as well, and will be posting about my experiences and writing gear reviews. I also plan to use videos hosted through YouTube and similar sights to demonstrate some of the how-to topics of my other blogs and to document some of my future adventures on the new catamaran, etc. Scott B. "Williams manages to speak to the novice as well as the seasoned survivalist. Bug Out is divided into two parts: Basics and Locations. It begins with what kind of bag you should consider and builds from there; encompassing clothing, food, shelter, gear, vehicles, and more. Part two divides the continental U.S. into eight regions and offers bug out locations as well as region specific weather, resources, hazards, and recommended equipment. "The premise is that something happens that makes you need to head for the woods in a hurry, or 'bug out.'

Scott devotes the first third of the book detailing what to take and how to prepare. The rest is a description of places to go throughout the lower 48 states — national forests, swamps, mountain ranges, river basins, islands. Here Scott calls into play his ample experience camping in places ranging from the River of No Return Wilderness in Idaho to Everglades National Park, Florida. The book also addresses how to survive when you get to your wilderness hideout. Again, Scott calls on ample experience." Read full review at: The Enterprise-Journal
"The author of “Bug Out” knows about the topic firsthand. More than 20 years ago Scott Williams “bugged out” himself, making a 2,500-mile solo sea kayak voyage across the Caribbean. That was before the term 'bug out' came into vogue. Williams referred to that sort of travel as 'checking out.'" Read the full article at The Enterprise-Journal.
"The book is divided into two parts, the first half can apply to any country.. These sections cover the Fantasy and Reality of living off the land, citing survivor experiences such as Chris McCandless, Martin Price, Kayak bill, Jim Corbett, Eric Robert Rudolph and Tom Brown. When I opened the book and read the first paragraph, I knew this was a novel I wouldn't put down until the the end.

S.A. Bailey tells the story of Jebediah Shaw in a matter-of-fact first person style that has you believing you're reading a non-fiction narrative. His descriptions of the people and landscapes of East Texas are so real you know he's writing from first-hand experience as a resident of the area. Having lived in the South most of my life as well, these characters and their hidden world of drugs and corruption beneath the surface of sleepy small towns scattered through the rural countryside and woods are all too real to me.

S.A. Bailey knows the territory, as evidenced in descriptions such as this: "Bear Wallace, my partner and oldest friend, lived way outside of town, near the county line, down a dirt road no one with any sense would venture unless they knew they were welcome. It just looked foreboding, as if it were always autumn, the long dirt driveway leading off the blacktop shrouded beneath the thick canopy of age-old oak and pine, toward a dark whirlpool where the ghouls of young nightmares never left."

But As the Rain Came Down is so much more than just evocative descriptions that make you feel like an outsider catching a glimpse of a dangerous corner of America that at times seems like another country. The story takes you in from the first page and leads relentlessly into the downward spiral of deeper and deeper trouble that Jeb gets himself into in his quest to bring home the bread and make a life with some sense of normalcy and stability for the woman he loves. Torn between two worlds - that of the soldier who can never really come completely home from a war that changed him forever, and that of the man he wants to be for her - the man he knows he never really can be, Jeb will do anything to give her what he thinks she wants. The further he goes down that path, the more elusive his goal becomes. Once you're caught up in Jeb's story, you won't be able to escape any more than he can, and you won't put this book down until you're right there with him at the conclusion of this wild and dangerous ride.

If there's a sequel to As the Rain Came Down, I'll eagerly look forward to finding out what happens to Jeb next. But whatever S.A. Bailey writes to follow up this great first novel, I'll be waiting to read it.Scott B. Today the UPS truck arrived with two boxes of books: my author's copies of Bug Out: The Complete Plan for Escaping a Catastrophic Disaster Before It's Too Late So the idea that came to me last April and had just caught the interest of my editor at Ulysses Press by this time last year is now a published book - certainly making this the fastest experience I've had so far in pitching, writing and publishing a book.
Since my copies arrived here, that means the books are starting to ship from the printer's warehouse, and should be reaching bookstores and online outlets like Amazon any day now. You can still pre-order the book from Amazon at the above link to get the guaranteed low price of $10.17 - even though the listing says it has not been released yet - it will be shipping as soon as their first copies arrive. A sample has been written and yesterday I received a second book contract from Ulysses Press - something I certainly didn't expect to happen even before Bug Out was released.

I'll have a busy spring and summer, as the manuscript for this new book is due by September 1, and publication is scheduled for January. I like the fast pace however, and I'm excited to be working with a publishing company that understands the market and is able to move fast enough on these projects to get them to readers while the interest is there. In a recent Publisher's Weekly article, Ulysses Press was named among the fastest-growing publishers in 2009, despite the recession that has hurt the industry as a whole. Here's the full article:
Most of the changes involved swapping out some of the illustrations and correcting captions. The maps for each region discussed in the book look great as well. One of those new projects is my new blog: Bug Out Survival which I am developing to expand on the topics covered in the book and to provide a place for interaction with my readers who are interested in these topics. Lately, I've been doing a good bit of research into ebooks and ebook reading technology, mainly because of the growing popularity of ebook reading devices. With better options for making use of such electronic books, such as Amazon's Kindle 2 (above) and the larger Kindle DX, not to mention netbooks, reading apps for smartphones like Mobipocket Reader and others, more and more readers are purchasing books in electronic format.

Not having purchased a Kindle reader yet, I downloaded the free Kindle for PC application from Amazon to sample the functionality of it and I have to say I am quite impressed. A quick search through Amazon's Kindle Store led me to quite a selection of great classic literature that is available for free download. I quickly added such titles as: Heart of Darkness, Two Years Before the Mast (Signet Classics), and Walden to my electronic library and gave them a try on Kindle for PC. Even on the laptop, the readability with the Kindle program is much easier than trying to read books in PDF format on Adobe Acrobat Reader. Page turns are simple with a click of the mouse or a push on the space bar, and bookmarks and notations can be made in an instant so that you can quickly find key passages.

In addition to all these free classics available from Amazon, most publishers of "dead tree books" are now offering Kindle Editions to go alongside their traditional hardcover and paperback designs. My own books published by University Press of Mississippi are a good example. Currently, two of them are available as Kindle Editions, and my forthcoming book to be published by Ulysses Press in May will surely be available for Kindle as well. Look at the cost savings on these two books:
For some reason Paddling the Pascagoula is not yet available on Kindle, (I'll blame it on my co-author, Ernest Herndon) but hopefully it will be soon.

Seeing the advantages of offering books in Kindle format led me to look into producing a Kindle Edition for Astray of the Herd: Observations, Commentaries and Rants from Outside the Mainstream, as well. I initially published this book through a independant Print-On-Demand system worked out pretty well, but in order to make even a minimal royalty, I had to price it at $14.00 for the printed version. Now, with Amazon's digital publishing, I have produced it in ebook format and can offer it for just $2.49. Here is a link to the Kindle Edition:

Through Amazon I can also offer the same paperback edition as the original for a lower price of just $10.95. I 'm in the process of preparing that now. In another post in the near future, I will write about my adventures of publishing both for Kindle and print through Amazon, and provide some helpful resources for readers who would like to do the same.
Kindle and other forms of ebooks are great for people who are voracious readers, are on the go a lot, or like me, need to carry a lot of reference books, guidebooks and other reading material in a small space, such as on a sailboat. The space savings, cost savings on books compared to printed books and the availability of many free books makes a Kindle reader high on my list of near-future purchases. Just as the Ipod allowed me to leave the CDs at home, a Kindle reader will certainly lighten my load.
Scott B. There is still much work to do before the publication date of May 1, 2010, as there will be the normal round of revisions and I still have to complete things like the appendices, bibliography and index. For those who have been asking just exactly what this book is all about, I will include the table of contents in my next post. In addition, I will soon be launching a new blog to accompany the book and allow me to expand on some of the content within it as well as address related topics. In the meantime, you can read the publisher's description of the book below or go to the Amazon page for it, where it is already listed and available for pre-order:
Book Description:

Escaping a doomed city during the first few hours of an impending crisis can make the difference between life and death. The tragic lesson of Hurricane Katrina applies to any large-scale crisis: Don’t hope to wait it out or expect the government to bail you out – just get out. Since natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and civil unrest may be unavoidable and can quickly strip away all the comforts and security of civilization, Bug Out provides the information readers need to make an exit and escape the ensuing chaos sure to befall those who do not know how to react. From pre-planning and mapping out an escape route to preparing gear and supplies for wilderness living in a remote location, this book provides the ordinary urban-dwelling American with information on what to take and where to go to have the best chance of survival. Bug Out includes advice on overcoming pitfalls (like road or gas station closures) that could delay or even prevent one’s escape and provides descriptions of more than one hundred potential wilderness “bug-out locations” in all parts of the Lower 48 States.Scott B. I've been on a fairly rigid schedule of research and writing in order to get it done, and it's starting to shape up like a book at last. Of course there will be revisions to do when the editors at Ulysses Press get a chance to go through all of it, but hopefully these will not be extensive and it will stay on schedule for publication in May, 2010.

I will soon be posting a description of the book here, with a summary of the contents. This has been an interesting experience and my research and writing has me longing to get out into the wilderness somewhere - especially out West someplace like the Gila or the Blue Range. I miss the frequent road trips I used to take out there to go backpacking in truly wild country, but alas, even once the book is done, this is not the time of year to head to the high country. Even here in south Mississippi, it has been unusually cold for this early in December - good weather for writing, which is what I need - but not so good for working on the boat or other outside projects.
Scott B. There are more big road-less tracts of wild lands in this country than most people can imagine.

I've recently signed a publishing contract for another book, and will begin work on it as soon as I have finalized the table of contents and structure with my editor. I'm keeping quiet for the most part regarding the subject matter of this project, at least until I'm further along in writing the manuscript. I'll just say that it's a work of informative non-fiction, timely in light of recent and current events and circumstances in this country, and something someone else was bound to write sooner or later if I had not thought of it first.

I came up with the idea back in April, my thoughts wandering while doing some mindless repair work and painting on an old house. Although the specific idea for the book materialized that particular day, I had often thought along similar lines about how I could put together some of the useful knowledge I had gained over the years while seeking out the wildest possible places to go backpacking, kayaking and canoeing. With more than twenty years of poring over National Forest Service and other wilderness area maps, and then trying to make my way to the emptiest blank spots on them, I knew there must be some way I could make what I had learned available and useful to others who might not have the time to do their own exploring.

After hitting on the idea for the structure of a book using this information, I quickly put my thoughts down in outline form and began searching on Amazon to see if there was already something in print that would compete too closely with my new book. There wasn't. Amazon.com is a great resource for quickly searching books in print. It is also extremely useful for searching supporting titles that help show a new book idea's viability. I found lots of such titles that were selling well and began work on a book proposal. The proposal went together quickly, and consisted of the usual overview and market analysis, author bio and expanded table of contents, or chapter-by-chapter outline. The sample chapter would come later, as I was in a hurry to get query letters out and get a feel for the idea's reception among book publishers.

Knowing this would be a title aimed at a national audience and with the potential to reach a lot of readers, I began my search in the Writer's Market for independent commercial publishers who had previously published works related to the topic. Although three of my previous books have been published by University Press of Mississippi, this project would not be right for their catalog, nor would they likely have the distribution capability to reach the intended audience.

The premise for the book proved viable when I quickly received requests from three publishers to see the complete proposal. I was already working on the sample chapter, but now had to really put in the hours to rush it to completion. When it was finished, the proposal was almost 20,000 words long, a fourth of the length of the completed book. The publisher who ultimately bought the manuscript made an offer in less than a week of receiving the proposal. The acquisitions editor for this company said that this was a book they had been looking for, and he wanted it with only a few minor tweaks to the content I had outlined.

The whole process, from idea to signed contract took place in less than two months - far faster than anything I've experienced previously in the world of book publishing. Another thing I'm excited about with this publisher is that they intend to publish the book within six months of receiving the manuscript. I've promised to write it in six months as well, so that means it will be available for sale in one year.

I'll certainly post more information here about the project when the time is right. The publisher, an independent press located in California, will also likely announce the book sometime in the fall, as they begin pre-selling to the bookstore chains in advance of going to press so they can determine how many copies to order on the first print run.

In the meantime, I have to set myself on a fairly rigid schedule of research and writing. The hardest part will be figuring out how to condense all the information I have available on the topic down to a 300-page (75,000-words) manuscript.
Scott B. Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10984429607322718345noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6925353116105107250.post-32747600213887931872009-05-25T06:35:00.012-05:002009-12-04T18:06:44.012-06:00HTML, iframe and Blogger Template Headaches...
I've always been a "do it yourself" kind of guy when it comes to most things that I need. That's why I learned to build my own boats, make my own sails and many other skills that I would have never thought I would learn until the day came when I needed them. I used to hate computers and didn't want anything to do with them. For years my only use for them was for the word processor function, writing my books and articles and occasionally surfing the Net in the course of research. Then the time came a few years ago, when as a newly published author, I realized I had to have a website. Of course I didn't want to pay someone to build it for me. That would be expensive, and I would have to wait on someone else's schedule every time I wanted a simple change. So I started the process sometime back in 2003, and it continues to this day.

Building and updating my website and blogs has been an ongoing project filled with challenges and interesting problems. Since I do not have any formal training in writing code, learning to get the appearance and functionality I want on my various pages has been a hit and miss effort, requiring lots of searching online for instructions and tips. Fortunately, just about anything you need to know is freely available in various forums and on how-to sites and blogs.

Anyone who has been following my blogs or visiting this site for any length of time knows that I've made many changes over the years and have redesigned the whole site more than once. Hopefully, it is now in a form I can live with for awhile, and any changes will be simple additions, rather than major overhauls.

The main purpose of this front page blog, which is embedded in an "iframe" element, for those who may not know how that works, is to allow easy and updates and add dynamic content to an otherwise static page. I'm writing this right now as a post in my Blogger account, but as soon as I finish it and hit the "publish post" button, it will also appear on my main website page where you are likely reading it now in the iframe that starts a third of the way down the page.

I prefer to use Blogger for all my blogs, hosting them each on a separate blogspot address. It's easy to set them up, the templates can be modified as extensively as you require, search engines such as Google readily index new posts, and best of all - it's free. But despite this, I would never use a blogspot address for my main website. Instead, this site is hosted separately under the domain scottbwilliams.com, which allows me to build the pages anyway I like, but requires a site building software program to update it. What I wanted with this homepage blog is to integrate it more or less seamlessly with the main index page of the larger site, having the navigation bars and header that you see at the top of the page the same as on all the pages in the website.

In the previous version of this site, before this past weekend's update, I had my Scott's Boat Pages blog integrated into this home page in the form of a live feed from Feedburner. While that worked okay for displaying the text and posts from recent photos on the blog, the live feed does not include all the extra widgets in the blog like the sidebars you see to the right with links, recent posts, archives and other material. Instead, it converts everything to a basic text, which can be customized, but is real pain using CSS (cascading style sheets) and other advanced techniques.

The iframe option is a simple code element that is easy to install with the sitebuilder program I am using for this site, and it is a simple matter to set it up to display the content of a blog or any website in its own separate window that can be displayed on any webpage. The problem with this, as I discovered late yesterday after publishing all the new changes to my site, is that when you click on links within the site or blog that is displayed in the iframe, the new link opens within the iframe instead of the whole page you are viewing. For example, the links in this post or in the sidebar to the right would try to open the whole new site within this small window. In the case of sites with larger pages, such as SmugMug, where my photos are hosted, the page would expand over the iframe borders, but not allow you to use the "back" button to return back to my home page. I quickly realized this would not work, and so began yet another intensive search through web design forums looking for a solution, because I really wanted to keep the blog in this iframe and retain the colors, sidebars and any future widgets I might want to add later.

My searches turned up many discussions about this topic, with some people saying it couldn't be done and others saying it was easy. Some solutions required adding a tag to each link that would tell it to open in a new window. This would defeat the purpose of a simple and readily updated blog, if I had to go in and manually add HTML tags to every link from now on. At last, after working on this much later than I intended last night, I found a post on The Useful Blog that offered an easy way to make my links here behave the way I wanted them to.

It turned out that all I had to do was go into my template on Blogger and edit the HTML, adding this simple tag: base target="top" into the head section of the template code. This tells every link within the blog to open at the top of the page, breaking it out of the iframe and allowing the back button to function again.

Now that I've overcome that hurdle, I'm content to leave this blog in the iframe to maintain the appearance you see now and allow for full functionality of the sidebar widgets. Since the blog is hosted on its own blogspot address, search engines can still index the posts, even though they can't "see" the content within the iframe on a page. I don't really like having the header you see at the top of this post visible on the main website, but it needs to remain so that visitors who come directly to the blogspot address know what they are reading.

Another simple modification that I feel is necessary to put a blog into an iframe on a page like this is to get rid of the Blogger navigation bar that appears at the top of every blogspot page. This is another simple code addition to the template, which I found online and added as soon as I set this blog up. The code: #navbar-iframe { display: none !important;} placed under the head section of the template magically makes the annoying blue bar go away.

Working with this stuff gives me a headache and eats up an extraordinary amount of time, but it is an interesting learning experience, and it's all part of the process of writing and publishing using the awesome tools and resources available on the Internet.
Scott B. Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10984429607322718345noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6925353116105107250.post-67859861699434966912009-05-24T06:16:00.002-05:002009-12-04T18:06:21.609-06:00Photo Gallery Website
Regular visitors to my site may have noticed that I've removed all my photo galleries and slide shows from pages hosted on this site. Most of the images I had posted here had been around several years, and the process of updating pages and adding new photos was slow and time consuming. I've been doing a lot more photography in the last year or so, and the number of images that I want to post has become overwhelming.

To help with organizing all these photos and to make them easier for visitors to view, I've set up a pro account on Smug Mug, a photo hosting site that provides plenty of options for displaying and distributing photos. I get occasional requests from visitors who want to either purchase a print or the rights to use an image in a publication or online. With the Smug Mug account, this is all set up to be automated and purchases can be made through the site by the visitor. Options include many sizes of prints as well as electronic downloads. The images displayed on the account are protected by a watermark and are disabled from "right click" downloading. Once purchased, however, the the watermark is removed.

Example image: A small private schooner docked in Back Bay, Biloxi. For more images in this gallery, click here.

Another cool thing about hosting photos on Smug Mug is that I can upload them there just one time, and still use them in my various blogs and on the pages of my website by simply embedding an html source code that links back to them. This way they don't take up space anywhere else and the same watermark is carried to the other sites. Smug Mug galleries can also be set up for various levels of accessibility. Each gallery can be customized so that photos are visible to all visitors or just to the ones you give a password to. These options are useful to pro photographers who work with portraits and wedding for example, as all the photos can be available for selection by the customer, but not visible to anyone else.

It will take me months to get all the images I have to post in my galleries edited and online, and of course like all my websites, it will be an ongoing process for years to come. If you have a need to upload lots of photos for a similar purpose, I can highly recommend SmugMug based on my limited experience with it so far. To see all the galleries I've set up on my account so far, go to http://photography.scottbwilliams.com/
Scott B.
